Club – History, Sparta Rotterdam – The Oldest Club in Holland

The story of Sparta Rotterdam begins in 1888, when it was founded, being a cricket club. Founded in 1888 Sparta is the oldest professional football club in Holland. Sparta’s home town is Rotterdam and the area where you can find the stadium is called “Spangen”.

In 1890 Sparta started playing football within the Dutch competition, their first match was against Kralingen, a game they won easily; 6-0. After having played national matches for four years, Sparta wanted to see if they could succeed against an opponent from abroad. In the year 1893 Harwich & Parkstone FC (founded in 1877) travelled to “Spangen” to compete with Sparta Rotterdam, a game Sparta lost; 0-8.

A game worth mentioning is: “Chelsea vs Sparta”, played in 1906. In that year Sparta defeated London’s Chelsea with 0-2.

 

As football became more popular within the Dutch culture, the club started to grow, and as Sparta became bigger, they succeeded to achieve excellent results:
